Measure authorizes spending until 4 December as Republicans seek to avoid volatile issue in election season
The US House of Representatives on Tuesday approved a stopgap measure to head off a government shutdown until early December, with its Republican leaders seeking to defuse a volatile issue in the run-up to the November midterm elections.
The continuing resolution authorizing government spending until 4 December passed by a vote of 220-205, roughly along party lines. It next heads to the Senate, where it will need to win bipartisan support to clear the chamber.

A federal appeals panel has reversed a lower court decision ordering the release of pro-Palestinian activist Mohsen Mahdawi, opening the door to the re-arrest of a student protest organizer whom the Trump administration has spent more than a year trying to deport.
Tuesday’s ruling from the second US circuit court of appeals in New York City overturns a previous decision by a federal judge in Vermont, which likened the government’s efforts to expel him and other activists to McCarthyist repression.

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, acknowledged on Tuesday he does not have the authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged US federal authorities to do so if the Israeli prime minister visits the US later this year.
“Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” Mamdani said in a video posted to social media.

A planned joint US-Canada ceremony Friday celebrating the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, is no longer expected to take place after Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on most Canadian goods.
In announcing the tariffs, the president accused Canada of unfairly discriminating against US automobiles, alcohol and dairy products, escalating tensions with one of the United States’ closest allies.

Après plusieurs bâtiments publics et privés de Rimouski, au tour de l’Exposition agricole de Rimouski d’être la cible d’actes de vandalisme.
L’organisation a publié, le 16 juillet dernier, des photos montrant des graffitis sur certains de ses bâtiments, déplorant une situation qui s’ajoute à la vague de vandalisme observée récemment dans différents secteurs de la ville.
« Les bâtiments de l’Exposition agricole de Rimouski n’ont malheureusement pas échappé à cette triste épidémie. Nous tenions à vous partager ces images, car au-delà de l’inflation et de la hausse des coûts, ce genre de gestes est aussi directement responsable de l’augmentation du prix des billets de plusieurs activités », peut-on lire dans une publication diffusée sur sa page Facebook.
Cette nouvelle série de graffitis survient alors que plusieurs cas semblables ont été rapportés au cours des dernières semaines à Rimouski.
À la fin de juin, l’ex-conseiller municipal Pierre Chassé avait dénoncé la multiplication de graffitis sur des infrastructures publiques et privées.
Il affirmait avoir constaté que certains endroits fraîchement nettoyés avaient de nouveau été vandalisés quelques semaines plus tard.
Parmi les sites touchés figuraient notamment des installations du Complexe sportif Guillaume-Leblanc, un abri près de la piste d’athlétisme ainsi qu’une roulotte de chantier installée devant l’école Paul-Hubert.
Pierre Chassé avait alors invité les citoyens à demeurer vigilants et à transmettre à la Sûreté du Québec toute information pouvant aider à identifier les responsables.
