A senior Ukrainian Air Force commander has quit over Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov's removal, public broadcaster Suspilne reported. Pavlo Yelizarov tied his resignation to the reshuffle, and warned about the reforms it leaves hanging.

Ukraine is deep into its fifth year of full-scale war and reshuffling its government mid-fight, with the president dropping a popular reformer reportedly to smooth over a feud with the military's highly unpopular top commander.

A resignation report tied to one firing

Yelizarov posted his resignation report in the stories on his Facebook page. He gave a single reason: Fedorov's dismissal.

He called Fedorov the initiator of "strategic reforms in the field of air defense." Yelizarov said that firing and the alleged blocking of those reforms "will cause numerous casualties and destruction of Ukraine."

Ukraine’s reformist defense Minister is out after six months. Earlier, his audit exposed $7.2 billion in defense overspending

Yelizarov joined Ukraine's Armed Forces on 24 February 2022, the first day of Russia's full-scale invasion. He took the deputy Air Force command on 19 January 2026.

The reshuffle behind the exit

His departure comes during a wider Cabinet shake-up. Ukraine's parliament confirmed Fedorov as defense minister on 14 January, replacing Denys Shmyhal, in Yulia Svyrydenko's government.

On 15 July, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signaled he would propose Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko for the post in the new Cabinet — a criticized pick.

Fedorov's exit closed a six-month tenure that opened with an audit uncovering billions in defense overspending. His removal also pushed out the ministry's top drone-fund adviser.

The dismissal also brought people onto the streets. Ukrainians rallied against it in KyivLvivDniproVinnytsiaIvano-FrankivskKhmelnytskyiUzhhorodLutskKropyvnytskyi, and other cities.

Denmark has sent Ukraine 10 more mobile climate shelters for aviation equipment. Ukraine's Defense Ministry says the units maintain the temperature and humidity levels needed to store aviation technical equipment.

Fighter jets are as good as the parts kept ready for them. The shelters allow Ukraine to keep equipment serviceable, extend its working life, and perform quality maintenance on aircraft under wartime conditions, per the Defense Ministry.

Among the equipment that needs special protection are metrological instruments, electronic components, and other systems sensitive to temperature swings.

Why does Ukraine require special protection?

Ukraine now operates 25 shelters, and Denmark plans to deliver 15 more by the end of 2026, bringing the total to 40.

Ukraine possesses a vast number of aircraft, including F-16s that intercept Russian missiles and drones nightly, but they only fly if the components that keep them airworthy survive Ukrainian summers and winters in the field.

The equipment came through the International Air Force Capability Coalition, which also trains Ukrainian pilots and technical personnel, transfers aircraft, and develops airfield infrastructure.

Denmark gives more of its economy to Ukraine's defense than any other country

Denmark has committed $11.1 billion in military aid to Ukraine for 2022 through 2028, and added $600 million to its Ukraine Fund for 2026. Measured as a share of national economic output, Denmark is the world's leading supporter of Ukraine's military.

Copenhagen co-founded the F-16 coalition with the Netherlands and Norway, began training Ukrainian pilots on the aircraft in August 2023, and has delivered multiple batches of jets.

Danish model channeled $2.7 billion in two years

It was the first country to buy weapons directly from Ukraine's own defense industry for Ukraine's army — the arrangement now known as the "Danish model," through which the EU and allied countries have channeled $2.7 billion in two years.

In February 2026, Denmark and Ukraine launched a €33 million project to modernize a Ukrainian defense training center. Danish military aid since 2022 has included F-16s, air defense missiles, tanks, artillery, and drones.

Ukraine's Defense Ministry thanked Denmark for consistent support and contribution to strengthening Ukrainian aviation.

Ukraine's Air Force said it shot down a Russian Su-35 multirole fighter on 8 July. The Air Force reported the shootdown in the eastern direction. No imagery of the downed aircraft has been published, and the claim has not been independently verified.

The Su-35 (NATO code Flanker-E) is Russia's most advanced 4th-generation multirole fighter. Russia entered its full-scale war in February 2022 with around 100 Su-35s and had lost eight in 45 months of fighting by December 2025.

If confirmed, this would be at least the ninth Su-35 loss of the war. Russia's small Su-35 fleet is difficult to replace, as Russian factories ordered 12 Su-35s in 2024 and delivered only 10, according to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI).

Ukraine has been hitting Russian aviation supply chains as well as aircraft. In 2025, Ukrainian Flamingo cruise missiles struck the Skif-M facility in Belgorod with four cruise missiles, all four confirmed hits by satellite imagery. Skif-M supplies specialized tooling — drills, cutters, and inserts — used to machine the advanced alloys and composites in Su-35 and Su-57 production.

Su-35 program has been rebuilt twice since 1990s

The Su-35 traces back to a Sukhoi Design Bureau program that further evolved the Su-27, according to ArmyInform. The prototype T-10M-1 first flew on 28 June 1988, and the first serial aircraft flew on 1 April 1992. Twelve prototypes were produced in the early 1990s before the program was suspended in favor of the Su-37.

Russia restarted Su-35 development in 2005 with the updated designation Su-35BM. The serial variant currently in service with Russia's Aerospace Forces is the Su-35S.

Ukraine's aerial exchange has intensified

The claim lands during a period of intense aerial exchange. Ukraine lost three MiG-29 fighters on 27 June, with one shot down in the air and two destroyed on the ground at Voznesensk airfield. Ukrainian drones damaged at least seven Russian warplanes at the Saky airbase in occupied Crimea on 2-3 July, per acting Security Service Head Yevhenii Khmara.

Russia struck Kyiv on 2 July with nearly 500 drones and 77 missiles, killing at least 30 people. Zelenskyy told the NATO Defense Industry Forum in Ankara on 7 July that current Patriot production is not enough to meet the growing demand for protection against ballistic missiles, per ABC News.

Russia's massive combined missile and drone attack overnight on 6 July killed civilians and wrecked several apartment buildings across Kyiv, Ukrainian officials reported. Air defenses stopped nearly all cruise missiles and most drones but intercepted none of the ballistic and Zircon missiles. The capital declared a day of mourning while rescuers kept digging through damaged high-rises.

Moscow attacks Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles daily, targeting primarily residential buildings and civilian infrastructure and killing civilians across the country in strikes Ukraine and international bodies qualify as war crimes. Last night's assault was the second massive missile attack in days.

Zero ballistic intercepts in a 419-weapon attack

Ukraine's Air Force said its radar units tracked 68 missiles and 351 attack drones during the night. The salvo included 23 Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, six Zircon/Oniks anti-ship missiles, 33 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and six Kalibr cruise missiles. Kyiv was the main target.

By 08:30, the defenders had downed or suppressed 363 targets. They stopped all six Kalibrs, 31 of 33 Kh-101s, and 326 drones. Not one ballistic or Zircon missile fell to an interceptor. The Air Force recorded 29 ballistic missile impacts and 18 drone hits at 34 locations, plus falling debris at 16 more.

Ukraine's Defense Ministry appealed to nearly 40 partner countries just four days earlier to urgently release Patriot interceptors. Those missiles remain the only reliable answer to Russian ballistic weapons.

11 dead in Kyiv, three children among the hospitalized

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko reported that the Russian attack killed at least 11 people in the city. One wounded man died in the hospital in the morning. The strike injured 46 people, and medics hospitalized 27 of them, including three children. Prosecutors opened another war-crime investigation over the deaths.

Four city districts took damage, with Podilskyi hit hardest. One nine-story building there lost its apartments from the fifth floor to the ninth. The State Emergency Service said rescuers walked 17 people out of that building and brought 28 more down by fire ladder. City authorities earlier reported two dead and 22 rescued at a 25-story Darnytskyi building that debris struck at the fourth-floor level.

Klitschko added that Russian weapons hit residential high-rises in Darnytskyi district too. A fire broke out in a 25-story building, where the attack destroyed apartments between the second and fifth floors. Falling debris set apartments burning on the 23rd through 25th floors of a 30-story complex, and a garage cooperative nearby caught fire, rescuers reported. A warehouse burned in Obolonskyi district, and crews also worked in Holosiivskyi.

Day of mourning and rerouted trains

Klitschko announced that 7 July would be a Day of Mourning in Kyiv. Flags on all municipal buildings drop to half-mast, and the city banned entertainment events. The search operation in Podilskyi and Darnytskyi districts continued, with people possibly still under the rubble.

National railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said the State Emergency Service restricted train movement on some Kyiv Oblast sections for safety reasons. Five long-distance trains switched to backup detour routes with all key stops preserved but delays expected. Suburban traffic in the Fastiv direction also suffered, so shuttle buses now link Boiarka with Kyiv.

Head of the Kyiv Oblast Military Administration Mykola Kalashnyk reported that the attack killed one person in Bucha district. By 7:30, 15 residents of the oblast had been hurt, with 11 in hospitals, among them a nine-month-old girl. The strikes damaged detached houses, businesses, and other civilian sites across Bucha, Vyshhorod, and Brovary districts.

The most dangerous situation developed in Vyshneve, where unexploded ordnance threatened secondary detonation. Police cordoned off the strike site, and the city council urged residents and businesses to stay in shelters and off the streets until the all-clear.

Drones have been highly effective in dismantling Russian logistics at middle ranges. But most mid-strike drones have payloads between 5 kg like the Hornet and 75 kg like the Behemot. There are big boys like the FP-2, which can carry a 200 kg warhead over 300 km, but they’re better spent on deeper targets.

Sometimes the mission calls for planting 250 kg of explosives into a hardened target in the near-rear. Drones can wound a fortified bunker or a reinforced command post but it takes a bigger boom to obliterate them.

This is where glide bombs come in and now Ukraine no longer has to be held back by limited Western supplies. The new Vyrivniuvach (“Equalizer” or “Leveler”) has entered serial production, developer DG Industries told Defense Archives writer Jeff2146 at the Eurosatory 2026 defense expo in France. Ukrainian company BlueBird Tech is working on its own glide bomb.

Ukraine’s drones and manned airstrikes actually have a symbiotic relationship. Unmanned systems have severely degraded Russian air defenses that threaten warplanes, opening more gaps for them to strike.

“Now that the Russians have significantly reduced the number of S-400 and S-300 systems, and we've acquired systems and units that can detect a missile in advance and promptly command the pilot to perform the appropriate maneuver, the opportunity has arisen to use such systems,” said Kostyantyn Kryvolap, a former aviation test engineer at the Antonov Design Bureau. “And the country has begun to use them. That's the whole idea.”

The bombs should help expand Ukraine's air interdiction campaign by giving them a harder-hitting option, the Institute for the Study of War predicted. It will also give the Russians a taste of their own medicine—they have been dropping thousands of glide bombs per month, wreaking havoc on frontline positions and urban centers alike.

On the other hand, the destruction of Russian command posts, deployment sites, and logistics hubs is pushing them farther and farther into the rear, ironically leaving fewer juicy targets for glide bombs. That is unless the pilots are willing to put themselves in greater risk by flying high or going deeper into enemy territory.

"If you're dropping something at a distance of 35-50 km, you have to search very hard for a suitable target," Kryvolap said. "Right now, the kill zone is getting to be 60 km. Right now, real targets are at least 100 km away."

Leveling the playing field and Russian targets

Russia is infamous for its glide bomb barrages that Ukrainians have struggled to deal with. However, Ukrainian bombers are also putting in the work.

Just days ago, Ukrainian MiG-29s blasted a base with two French AASM HAMMER glide bombs, demolishing a building reportedly filled with Russian personnel. In April, Ukrainian planes hit a UAV storage site at Donetsk Airport, flying close enough to drop GBU-39 Small Diameter Bombs.

Until recently, Ukraine relied on Western partners for these capabilities, like the HAMMERs or the American JDAM-ER kits that convert dumb bombs into precision guided munitions. Now, Ukraine can make its own kit, compatible with most bombs, at reportedly a third of the JDAM-ER’s $21,000 price tag.

Anton Zemlyanyi, a senior researcher with the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center, called it “an extremely important stage in the Ukrainian defense industry—Ukraine is focusing on its own combat needs and independently seeking solutions to problems without relying on military assistance from partners.”

The irony of range

Glide bombs can travel dozens of kilometers, with the HAMMER and the JDAM-ER having reported ranges of over 70 km. DG Industries claims that the Vyrivniuvach can go 130 km, which on paper is a major upgrade if accurate.

In practice, however, no glide bomb is likely to fly that far in Ukraine. Military analysts put the real maximum between 60 and 90 km and even those are likely to be exceptions rather than the rule. Defense Express estimates the practical range at 40 km.

To get maximum range on a glide bomb, a pilot has to fly very high, which makes them an easier target for more plentiful Russian aviation or remaining ground-based air defenses. Ukrainian planes frequently fly low to the ground before pulling up sharply to release the payload: what’s called toss bombing in the West and doing a “girka” in Ukraine.

Alternatively, they can fly closer to their targets, pull a girka, release the bombs, then get out of dodge. Getting close is also risky.

For three years, Russia glide-bombed Ukraine in escorted pairs. Now Ukraine is glide-bombing Russia the same way.

Ukraine’s air force is “quite careful about the issue of saving lives and our equipment, saving the lives of our pilots and our equipment,” Kryvolap said. This makes sense, as the air force is quite small compared to Russia’s and every plane, Soviet or Western, is a precious resource that cannot easily be replaced. Ditto for experienced pilots.

Since the start of the war, the country has lost 116 aircraft, according to the Oryx/Valka Online OSINT loss tracker.

Erosion of Russian air defenses

Still, the air force may have the cause to be more daring for some missions, given the sorry state of Russian air defense.

From June 2025 to early March, Ukraine conducted 492 strikes against air defense infrastructure and 433 more against anti-access/area denial assets, an analysis by Tochnyi.info reported.

They haven’t slowed down since. Between March and May, Ukraine’s General Staff reported 24 radar systems damaged in Crimea alone. In April, 25 air defenses were hit, including radars, Tor, Buk, Osa, and Pantsir systems, as well as pieces of S-400 and S-300V systems.

Meanwhile, after the latest mass strike on Moscow, Russia is setting up S-300 and S-400 installations in the capital, the Moscow Times reported. This means that fewer of these systems will be available to protect the sky in occupied territories.

Callsign Churchill, a company commander with the 413th Unmanned Systems Regiment “Raid” told Euromaidan Press that in some areas, the Russians are “losing the concept of layered air defense” as layers get picked off, creating blind spots. This makes the sky a little less deadly for planes.

The biggest threats to aircraft are S-400 air defense systems, which have reported ranges up to 400 km, though they are more likely to engage aircraft at up to 200 km, Kryvolap said. S-300s come in all kinds of variants and upgrades, but many can also threaten aircraft at far greater ranges than any glide bomb.

Russian forces depend on Crimea. Ukraine is turning it into an island.

The relative prevalence of these systems earlier during the war made the Ukrainian air force more reluctant to deploy aircraft on bombing missions where they could be shot down.

However, Ukrainian forces have been continually destroying these systems. There are dozens of reports on successful strikes on S-400 and S-300 missile systems and their radar.

This dynamic is an enabler for the use of Ukrainian glide bombs, experts said.

“Ukraine actively uses such weapons to strike enemy ground targets, especially given the lower conditions and level of countermeasures from the Russians,” Zemlyanyi said.

However, he cautioned not to overstate this trend. Russia has aviation of its own. “In conditions when both sides have operational front-line fighter aircraft… the use of aircraft for bombing is significantly complicated.”

Does Ukraine have enough planes to make it count?

Glide bombs are not just limited by Russian air defenses and fighters but by the number of aircraft Ukraine has, which is a fraction of Moscow’s. Based on open-source information, Ukraine’s air forces are focused on hitting Russian ground targets, though the jets dropping the bombs have to be screened from Russian aircraft by their fellow fliers.

The number of military jets Ukraine has is classified. TWZ reported that Kyiv entered the full-scale war with around 50 of its most prolific Soviet jet, the MiG-29 and 36 have been destroyed as of the start of June, according to Oryx.

Supplies were topped up by allies, with 14 transfers from Poland and 13 from Slovakia, though a portion of the above were to be used for parts. MiG-29s with Azerbaijani camo have been observed flying in Ukraine, though the number of Azerbaijani jets has not been reported.

Other planes that can use homegrown glide bombs include Su-24s and Su-27s. It’s not clear how many Ukraine has now, but Oryx confirmed 21 losses for Su-24Ms and 20 Su-27s. Su-27s are critically endangered as no ally can replace them.

What allies can do is give Ukraine more Western jets. After four recorded combat losses, Ukraine reportedly has up to 39 foreign F-16s in service, out of a total of 79 pledged. France transferred a handful of Mirage fighters to Ukraine as well. Both F-16s and Mirages were seen conducting what look like air-to-ground operations.

Meanwhile, Sweden announced the transfer of 16 Gripen JAS 39C/D by 2027 and the sale of 22 Gripen JAS 39E by 2030.

The Vyrivniuvach can reportedly be adapted to Western planes, though this will require additional certification. “So there should be no problems with the carriers of this bomb,” Zemlyanyi said.

Russia holds occupied southern Ukraine through a thin web of bridges and roads, and Ukraine has spent months working to turn that web into a trap. Kyiv's ongoing Logistics Lockdown — a mid-range strike campaign — keeps ravaging Russia's supply vehicles and logistics nodes in the occupied part of Ukraine.

A direct hit on the Karachokrak River crossing

Aviation of Ukraine's Air Force struck the bridge over the Karachokrak River at occupied Vasylivka in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, with the front line running just to its north. The Telegram channel Soniah released the airstrike video.

Part of a wider campaign to cut Russia's southern logistics

The airstrike fits a systematic campaign by Ukraine's Defense Forces to sever Russian supply routes, especially in the south. Overnight on 20 June, Ukrainian forces struck the road bridge over the Henichesk Strait near occupied Henichesk in Kherson Oblast, a crossing Russia uses for military logistics. Ukrainian forces also hit three railway bridges that form critical parts of Russia's military logistics in Ukraine's south, including Crimea.

At least 12 civilians were killed and 69 others injured in Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past 24 hours, regional authorities reported on July 7.

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 101 drones overnight, including Iranian-designed Shahed-type attack drones, as well as four S-300/400 guided missiles. Air defenses intercepted 75 drones, while another 17 likely served as radar-jamming decoys.

The drone and missile assault was countered using aviation, electronic warfare, mobile fire teams, and air defense systems, the military said.

The heaviest casualties occurred in Donetsk Oblast, where seven civilians were killed — four in Kostiantynivka, two in Druzhkivka, and one in Novohryhorivka — and 15 others were injured, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.

In Kharkiv Oblast, 27 people were injured, including three children, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov. At least three victims remain hospitalized in moderate condition, and the number may rise.

Russian forces also attacked critical and residential infrastructure in Kherson Oblast, killing two civilians and injuring nine, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said.

Two more civilians were killed in Sumy Oblast in a drone strike, local authorities said. Another person was injured. In Odesa Oblast, one civilian was killed and infrastructure was damaged in an attack on the regional capital, Governor Oleh Kiper reported.

In Zaporizhzhia, at least 12 people were injured in separate attacks throughout the day, including 10 during a drone strike on the city center, Governor Ivan Fedorov said.

Five civilians were injured in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast — two women and three men — in the latest wave of attacks, according to Governor Serhii Lysak.

The mass strikes come amid Russia's continued rejection of ceasefire proposals and its growing use of aerial assaults to pressure Ukrainian defenses.

Kyiv has repeated its urgent appeals to Western partners to ramp up deliveries of air defense systems to protect civilian areas from drone and missile attacks.
