Environmentalists and others warned at a hearing on Monday that the Trump administration’s attempt to strip power from California’s coastal protection agency would endanger the shoreline.

Donald Trump departed on a secret military flight from Turkey to Britain last month when the White House said he was flying aboard Air Force One, in an extraordinary ruse – prompted by an Iranian assassination threat – that involved hiding the president in an airport catering container, according to reporting from the Washington Post and the New York Times.
The operation took place when Trump was in Ankara for a Nato summit with world leaders, according to the Post. The president reportedly boarded the old Air Force One jumbo jet in view of television cameras, and then was secretly shuttled minutes later to a smaller plane via an airport catering truck typically used to load meals and other supplies preflight, a US official told the Post.

Jeffrey Hay Gallant, directeur scientifique à l’Observatoire des requins du Saint-Laurent, explique à InfoBref qu’il est toutefois important de distinguer l’augmentation des observations de l’augmentation du nombre réel de requins.
Selon l’expert, plusieurs facteurs combinés sont à l’origine de l’augmentation du nombre d’observations, dont:
le rétablissement de leur population dans le nord-ouest de l’Atlantique
l’abondance de leurs proies dans le golfe
le réchauffement des eaux
l’amélioration des moyens pour les observer
Population en santé
La population de requins blancs s’est progressivement rétabliedans le nord-ouest de l’Atlantique grâce aux mesures de protection mises en place au cours des dernières décennies, indique Jeffrey Hay Gallant.
Cette population «en meilleure santé produit davantage d’individus susceptibles de réoccuper des habitats historiquement fréquentés», comme le golfe du Saint-Laurent.
Le requin blanc n’est en effet pas une nouvelle espèce dans le golfe, rappelle l’expert.
«Il y est vraisemblablement présent depuis des siècles, voire des millénaires.»
Abondance de proies
D’importantes colonies de phoques sont présentes dans plusieurs secteurs du golfe.
Elles constituent, selon l’expert, «une ressource alimentaire importante qui attire les requins blancs pendant leur migration saisonnière».

Changements environnementaux
«Le réchauffement des eaux pourrait également contribuer au phénomène», note Jeffrey Hay Gallant.
Les changements environnementaux pourraient, croit-il, «prolonger la période pendant laquelle les conditions demeurent favorables à la présence du requin blanc dans le golfe».
Autrefois, les observations se concentraient sur une période plus courte.
Aujourd’hui, des requins blancs sont détectés régulièrement de juin à novembre.
«Une période de détection plus étendue augmente naturellement les probabilités d’observation par les chercheurs, pêcheurs, plaisanciers, plongeurs et autres usagers du milieu marin.»
Capacités d’observation
Les moyens pour détecter les requins blancs se sont considérablement améliorés.
Les programmes de recherche utilisent désormais:
la télémesure satellitaire et acoustique
les drones
les téléphones intelligents
aux médias sociaux
Ces outils, et l’augmentation du nombre de personnes fréquentant le milieu marin, «permettent de documenter des observations qui seraient probablement passées inaperçues il y a vingt ou trente ans».
