La femme forte rimouskoise, Jo-Annie Paquet, poursuit sur sa lancée depuis qu’elle a commencé à pratiquer la discipline en septembre 2025. Championne provinciale dans sa catégorie, elle prend maintenant part à des compétitions professionnelles.
Originaire de Matane, Jo-Annie a un parcours atypique dans son sport. Elle a pratiqué l’équitation pendant une dizaine d’années avant de s’adonner au CrossFit. C’est de cette façon qu’elle a découvert ses aptitudes en force.
« Je me suis battue contre ça pendant un bout de temps parce que ça vient avec le fait que le corps change. On ne fait pas ce sport en voulant avoir un corps énormément musclé, mais ce sont les conséquences de ce qu’on aime faire qui apportent ce corps. Il y a encore du jugement par rapport à ça », dit-elle.
En préparation pour un marathon en septembre dernier, Jo-Annie s’est rendue au Championnat provincial de Strongman Corp Québec qui se tenait à Granby et est repartie avec la première position.
« Ça m’a valu une participation au Arnold Masters Strongman World Championship à Columbus, en Ohio, en mars. C’est une compétition internationale et j’ai aussi gagné dans la catégorie 82 kg chez les 40 ans et plus (master). C’était une compétition amateur. Il y a des gens qui rêvent pendant des années d’y aller et je n’ai même pas eu le temps d’espérer y aller. Les filles contre qui je compétitionnais étaient mes idoles », exprime la femme de 43 ans.
Avec les pros
Après cette victoire, l’athlète est devenue professionnelle. « Nous sommes 30 au Canada à avoir notre carte. Je dois faire au moins une compétition professionnelle par année. Il n’y a pas de catégories d’âge ni de poids. Ce sont les meilleures au monde. Tout s’est passé tellement vite que c’est encore difficile pour moi de réaliser. »

Jo-Annie a par la suite pris part à une première compétition professionnelle à Fredericton où elle a terminé troisième. Elle s’est donc qualifiée pour le Championnat canadien professionnel de femmes fortes qui aura lieu, en septembre, à Québec ainsi que pour le Championnat nord-américain de Victoriaville qui se tenait les 25 et 26 juillet.
« C’était les meilleures femmes aux États-Unis et au Canada. J’étais la plus petite, la plus vieille et la moins expérimentée. Les charges étaient lourdes et il y avait des épreuves que je n’avais jamais faites. Le manque d’expérience ne m’a pas aidé, mais j’ai quand même terminé 11e sur 13 », indique-t-elle.
Sport à découvrir
Pour illustrer son sport, Jo-Annie cite en exemple Louis Cyr, Hugo Girard et Jean-François Caron.
« C’est de la force brute. Il faut lever et déplacer des charges lourdes. Les épreuves varient d’une compétition à l’autre. On peut lever une automobile ou tourner un pneu de 500 livres. C’est un entraînement de 2 h 30 cinq à six jours par semaine et la nutrition est calculée. Nous sommes de vrais athlètes. J’aime l’adrénaline que ça apporte et l’estime de soi. Je peux dire que je suis capable de faire un soulevé de terre de 460 livres. »

Avec des amis, elle a démarré l’organisme La Force de l’Est qui offre des démonstrations pour faire connaître le sport. Un membre, Keven Malenfant, propose un service d’entraînement. Les hommes forts et femmes fortes de la région peuvent également s’entraîner au Santé 2000 Le Club.
Depuis qu’elle a commencé son parcours de femme forte, Jo-Annie Paquet est particulièrement fière de conserver une discipline.
« La compétition est un cadeau. Ce sont tous les efforts que tu as donnés avant qui vont rapporter. C’est aussi une fierté de pouvoir faire vivre ça à mes amis et ma famille », conclut-elle.

Sky Sports is close to agreeing a new deal to extend its live coverage of the US Open. The three-year contract extension, which is expected to be announced when the singles draw from Flushing Meadows begins next week, will keep the tournament live on Sky until 2030.

Récemment, le Club de curling de Rimouski a obtenu une réponse de la Ville de Rimouski à sa demande d’aide financière, sans toutefois dévoiler le montant accordé. Le porte-parole du Club, Éric Desaulniers, avait qualifié la réponse de « verre à moitié plein ».
« On garde espoir, mais très sommairement, nous avons toujours un manque de 650 000 $ à aller chercher. On anticipait qu’on aurait entre 300 000 $ et 400 000 $ à récolter via des activités de financement », indiquait-il.

Le Club de curling de Rimouski poursuit donc ses démarches auprès de la population et des entreprises afin de compléter son montage financier.

Angel Reese rebounded her way into the record books not once, but twice in one night. Reese set a WNBA record with 26 rebounds in the Atlanta Dream’s 78-71 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday, pushing her past the season record in the same game.

At least one in four former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021 was found to have had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), according to a study released on Tuesday.
Out of the 878 former players who died during that time frame, 235 donated their brains for study, researchers said, with 215 of those donated brains found to have CTE, a degenerative disease that can only definitively be diagnosed after death. CTE is associated with repeated blows to the head, including concussions. Symptoms include difficulty with attention and memory, dementia, mood disorders and headaches.
German investigators now count three drones around the failed 4–5 August attack on a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport, Tagesschau reported on 25 August. Officers found the third machine and a suspected military explosive in a field near the runways. Security circles assume Russian intelligence services helped plan the attempt, and Russia denies any role.
Russia has answered Western support for Ukraine with a campaign inside Europe that runs on arson, recruited agents, and plots against arms-industry figures. While attribution in this case stays at the level of assumption, a suspected move by Moscow's services from watching people to leaving explosives on a working apron widens what German authorities have to guard rather than merely monitor.
A third drone and about 50 grams of suspected hexogen
Investigators found the third drone on the early evening of 14 August in a field in Kabelsketal, security circles told NDR, WDR, and the newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung (SZ). The area borders the airport's western edge in Saxony-Anhalt. Forensic technicians from Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) arrived that day, and the next day they reportedly found a substance at the site. First assessments put it at about 50 grams of hexogen, a military explosive known internationally as RDX. The perpetrators may have had a far larger attack in mind than what has become public, according to Tagesschau.
The target was a Ukrainian plane
The drone found on the tarmac was meant to hit a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft that moves military goods, according to the investigation cited by the public broadcasters NDR and WDR and SZ. The bomb never went off, because its detonator was apparently defective. The plane had been apparently loaded with ammunition the previous day. Leipzig/Halle carries military freight for the German armed forces and NATO allies, and Ukraine's Antonov Airlines uses it as a base, Euronews reported the same day.

The San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York has pleaded no contest to two criminal charges after being arrested at an Ohio trailer park over the weekend.
KRON4 News in San Francisco reported that York was initially arrested on suspicion of engaging in prostitution but that count was amended to a charge of disorderly conduct. He was also charged with possessing criminal tools.
