The country said Moscow was behind an explosive-laden drone found near a Ukrainian plane at a German airport last month. President Vladimir Putin of Russia called the accusation “a grave mistake.”
State and federal leaders are trying to avoid sharing sensitive intelligence with the Alternative for Germany should it take power in a state’s elections next week.
The Alternative for Germany campaigning in Berlin on Wednesday. The party is expected to do well in another part of Germany in elections on Sept. 6., possibly enough to take power there.
Officials were careful not to point a finger, after revealing what they said was a plan for a political attack, at a time when a series of destabilizing actions have been blamed on Russia.
“This case shows that we are working on the assumption that the risk level is high,” Alexander Dobrindt, the German interior minister, said at a news conference on Friday.
