A Russian drone killed a man in Antonivka, Kherson Oblast, at around 16:00 on 4 November, Kherson Oblast head Oleksandr Prokudin said. Russian attacks killed eight more civilians in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy oblasts over the past day and wounded dozens across Ukraine.

Russia’s war kills Ukrainian civilians almost every day, mostly in towns and villages within range of its drones, guided bombs, and artillery. Further from the front, its long-range drones and missiles go after the power grid as winter approaches. Even aid points are targets: on 2 November, a three-ton Russian bomb hit people collecting humanitarian aid in Komyshuvakha.

Bombs and drones kill eight more civilians in three oblasts

Russian attacks killed four people in Donetsk Oblast on 4 November, two in Serhiivka and two in Yasnohirka, and injured five, oblast head Vadym Filashkin reported. In Serhiivka, Russia hit the community with six guided bombs and destroyed two homes. In Yasnohirka, two Russian guided bombs killed two people and injured one, Filashkin said.

The two FAB-250 bombs struck a residential area of Yasnohirka at around 15:50, the Kramatorsk City Council reported. The women killed were born in 1973 and 1978.

In Zaporizhzhia Oblast, Russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia district killed three people and injured a man. Ivan Fedorov, head of Ukraine’s State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development, reported the toll. Over the day, Russia struck 53 settlements in the oblast 784 times, mostly with FPV drones.

A 57-year-old woman was also injured in Putyvl community, and Russian mortar fire wounded two men, aged 53 and 40, in Seredyna-Buda community, the oblast administration reported. Russia shelled 22 settlements in the oblast nearly 50 times over the day.

“Russian strikes take the lives of civilians in Sumy Oblast almost every day. The enemy attacks people in their own homes. Behind every such strike are destroyed families, lost lives, and irreparable grief,” Hryhorov said.

Wounded in six more oblasts and Kyiv

Overnight on 5 November, Russia launched two Kh-35 missiles and 128 attack drones at Ukraine, 65 of them jet-powered Shaheds, the Air Force reported. Gerbera drones and Parodiya decoys were among them. Russian drones and missiles hit 18 locations.

In Kherson Oblast, Russian drones, aircraft, and artillery hit 32 settlements over the past day and injured three people, the oblast administration reported. They damaged six homes and an administrative building. Two more women, aged 62 and 76, sought hospital care after a Russian shell hit their yard in Komyshany.

Russian forces attacked Kharkiv and 17 other settlements in Kharkiv Oblast, oblast head Oleh Syniehubov reported. Three men were injured, and three people, including an 8-year-old boy, suffered acute stress reactions.

In Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Russian drones attacked six districts nearly 20 times and injured three people in Dnipro, the oblast administration reported. Homes, businesses, and infrastructure were damaged across the oblast. Later, Russian artillery injured four women in Marhanets, two of whom were hospitalized.

A Russian attack lightly injured three people in Vinnytsia Oblast, the oblast administration said. Two trucks and a trailer caught fire, and a fire elsewhere damaged 11 cars, burning four of them out.

In Bucha district, Kyiv Oblast, a Russian drone attack overnight injured a man born in 1978, the oblast administration reported. He declined hospitalization. Firefighters contained a fire at a warehouse, and the blast damaged a car. In Kyiv’s Pecherskyi district, drone debris fell in an open area, the Kyiv City Military Administration said.

Russian strikes damage energy sites in Odesa and Chernihiv oblasts

A Russian attack damaged energy and civilian infrastructure in southern Odesa Oblast, the oblast administration said. It partly destroyed a delivery service warehouse and damaged a medical products maker’s office building. Windows were shattered at a college and a dormitory. No one was hurt, according to preliminary information.

Overnight, Russia also hit an energy facility in Chernihiv Oblast, and firefighters put out the blaze, the oblast administration reported. One district has emergency power cuts, and the rest of the oblast has hourly outages. Russian drones damaged houses in Berezna community, and an FPV drone set an outbuilding on fire in Semenivka.

Earlier Russian attacks claim more lives

The death toll from Russia’s 2 November strike on Komyshuvakha rose to 42, the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration reported on 5 November. Up to 33 more people may still be under the rubble, the National Police said. Two police officers, wounded on 1 November when a Russian drone hit their car near Komyshuvakha, have died.

Drones struck Russia’s Ryazan oil refinery overnight on 5 November, and the plant caught fire, Ukrainian Telegram channel Exilenova+ reported. The Rosneft-owned plant is one of Russia’s largest refineries.

Russia’s war runs on fuel and oil money, and Ukraine’s drones go for refinery parts that sanctions make hard to repair. The Ryazan refinery supplies fuel to Moscow and central Russia, and the last raid already cost it capacity. After the 15 October strike, one of its primary crude units shut down, two industry sources told Reuters. No one has yet reported which parts of the plant this fire hit. Ryazan is the fifth Russian refinery struck since 30 October, when strikes resumed after about two weeks without a reported refinery fire.

Fire at the refinery

Exilenova+ posted video of strike drones breaking through to the refinery’s industrial zone. About half an hour later, the channel wrote that the refinery had been attacked and was burning. Russian Telegram channel Astra said its OSINT analyst confirmed that the refinery itself was on fire.

Ryazan Oblast Governor Pavel Malkov claimed falling drone debris caused damage. Separately, he claimed fires broke out at industrial sites in Ryazan and damaged power lines cut electricity in part of the city. He also said an outbuilding caught fire in Rybnovsky district, private houses were damaged in Ryazan district, and a city school’s windows were blown out. One person was injured, he claimed. In a later update, Malkov claimed more than 200 drones attacked the region, power was restored, and the fires were out or contained.

He did not name the refinery. Three weeks earlier, after the 15 October raid, Malkov named the plant when he reported a fire there.

Astra also reported that a large Wildberries online-retail warehouse in Ryazan was presumably burning. Its analyst based that on a reader’s photo and had not verified it.

The refinery can process more than 17 million tons of crude a year, Exilenova+ noted. It makes gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, fuel oil, and bitumen. In its post on the fire, Astra also reported that the plant supplies Russia’s army, pointing to a 2014 Defense Ministry fuel batch and the TS-1 jet fuel it produces.

Four other refineries since 30 October

Drones hit Novokuibyshevsk in Samara Oblast on 30 October, the Bashneft-Novoil refinery in Ufa, Bashkortostan, on 31 October, and Lukoil’s Kstovo plant in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast on 1 November. Together, those three plants processed about 24 million tons of crude a year. That equals roughly 10% of Russia’s refining in 2024 and over 10% of its diesel. Overnight on 3 November, drones also struck the Slavneft-YANOS refinery in Yaroslavl. Yaroslavl Oblast Governor Mikhail Yevrayev said the attack damaged its infrastructure and wounded two workers. Crews were putting out a fire there, he added.

In Ufa, Astra’s analyst identified the burning plant as Bashneft-Novoil. Exilenova+ wrote that probably two Ufa refineries were attacked. Counting both, it calls Ryazan the sixth refinery hit in a week.

Drones hit Russia’s Samara oil hub that blends Urals export crude—first strike there since 11 October

On 15 October, US President Donald Trump called Ukraine’s renewed refinery strikes “a disgrace.” In late October, The Wall Street Journal reported that Ukraine had paused them under US pressure until after the 3 November US midterms. The Novokuibyshevsk strike came hours later, and drones have hit four more refineries since.
