Two men from Cameroon signed Russian army contracts and died within about a month. Ukraine's Defense Intelligence (HUR) published the identities of both, saying their bodies were found on the Lyman and Zaporizhzhia sectors of the front.

The two are recent entries in a recruitment pipeline that has pulled at least 27,000 foreign nationals from more than 130 countries into Russia's army, a pipeline the European Parliament voted 479 to 17 in March 2026 to classify as human trafficking.

By the count of HUR's "I Want to Live" project, Russia has cost the lives of at least 106 Cameroonian citizens since the full-scale war began.

One was student. One had been in Russia two months

Both men were from Douala, Cameroon's largest city. Both signed as infantry soldiers. Both were sent to a training center briefly and then to the front. Both were killed in what HUR calls "meat assaults", the frontal infantry attacks Russia uses to find Ukrainian firing positions with human bodies.

Ngouloure Ibrahim Nkite, born 10 March 2003, arrived in Russia on 9 February 2026. He signed a one-year rifleman's contract in the city of Oryol on 4 April. After a few weeks at a training center, he was sent to occupied Luhansk Oblast. He was killed around 12 May near Lyman in Donetsk Oblast. He was 23, and he had been in Russia for three months.

Tapindjeu Namekong Loique, born 15 April 2001, was a student at Michurinsk State Agrarian University in Tambov Oblast when he was recruited. He signed his rifleman's contract in Vologda on 25 March 2026. Like Nkite, he spent little time in training. He was killed around 23 April near Huliaipole in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. He was 25.

From contract to death, each man lived roughly a month.

Pattern HUR is documenting

Meanwhile, Ukraine says Russia plans to open eight new cultural centers in Africa to funnel young people toward the war, part of what it calls "a war for the minds of Africans." Ukraine counts more than 1,780 Africans from 36 countries fighting for Moscow.

HUR published the two men's names alongside its standard message: that the only way for a foreign national in the Russian army to survive is voluntary surrender, through the "I Want to Live" project.

Francis realized he had joined the Russian army when they handed him a uniform. The 35-year-old Kenyan, an electrical engineer by training, had signed what he believed was a contract for security guard work in Russia, he told Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Karpenko in an interview after his capture.

He is one data point in a recruitment system that has pulled at least 27,000 foreign nationals from more than 130 countries into Russia's army since February 2022, according to a joint report by the International Federation for Human Rights and Truth Hounds.

The European Parliament voted 479 to 17 in March 2026 to condemn the practice and classify it as human trafficking. Ukrainian intelligence estimates more than 1,700 fighters from 36 African countries have joined Russian forces. Kenya has shut down over 600 recruitment agencies. Ghana has confirmed more than 50 of its citizens killed.

The recruitment method is consistent across cases: a promise of civilian work, a contract in Russian that the recruit cannot read, and a uniform on arrival.

Job offer came from university friend

Francis finished a contract with a large company and was picking up odd jobs in his city. It was not enough to support his wife and daughter. In July 2025, he met a friend from university who told him about a security guard vacancy in Russia. Francis was out of steady work. He agreed.

The paperwork was minimal: a passport copy, a certificate of no criminal record, and a medical certificate. Even when he signed the contract, Francis says, he believed he was going to work as a guard.

He learned otherwise at the military base when they issued him a uniform.

Two weeks of training, then the front

Francis says he received roughly $9,000 during his service. He planned to build a house with it.

"The money would have been enough to build my own home," he said.

He also described the bride price tradition in his community, which can run to 99 goats but is negotiated between the groom and the bride's parents.

"It is a matter of negotiation. You do not need to pay everything at once. You can pay gradually, even over many years. If your father-in-law and mother-in-law see that you are a good husband, they can say: enough, we forgive the rest," he revealed.

In the war he was sent to fight in, Francis says he understood little.

"I only knew there was some kind of conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but I did not understand it was a full-scale war," he suggested.

He was sent to the front after two weeks of training. He was captured on 22 November 2025 while his unit was changing positions. His commander had stepped on a mine, and the unit was ordered to withdraw to another position.

"We were approaching the Ukrainian side, and during the crossing, we met two Ukrainian soldiers who fired shots into the air," Francis said.

He says he did not immediately understand what had happened, but when he saw his commander throw down his weapon and lie on the ground, he did the same.

Russia recruits where the jobs are not

Russia has built parallel manpower pipelines to avoid a full mobilization that would carry domestic political risk. Contract soldiers inside Russia, North Korean troops, and recruitment networks across Africa, Asia, and Latin America feed the front.

The African networks operate through what the New York Times called "fly-by-night companies", presenting themselves as travel agencies or job placement firms and advertising on WhatsApp and Telegram

Kenya's foreign minister says Russia agreed in March 2026 to stop recruiting Kenyan citizens. Families of the missing are still waiting.

Remnants of Russia's Wagner mercenary group have built a drug empire in the Central African Republic on the painkiller tramadol — a fief beyond the reach of law enforcement or even Moscow itself, the Wall Street Journal reported. Up to 500 mercenaries remain along the upper Oubangui River, led by Pavel Prigozhin, son of the group's late founder. Their control of the opioid trade now funds weapons, militias, and a deepening grip on the country.

Wagner was born as a weapon against Ukraine — created in 2014 for the Donbas war, spent on convict assaults at Bakhmut, and bankrolled by African gold that helped pay for Russia's ongoing invasion. The narco-fief on the Oubangui is what that machine turns into wherever nobody stops it: guns, loot, and terror running a country of their own.

Poor man's cocaine

Tramadol is normally prescribed for aching joints or post-surgery recovery. At high doses, the opioid turns into a fiercely addictive stimulant — the poor man's cocaine, as it is nicknamed. The recommended dose runs 50–100 milligrams. Shops across the Central African Republic routinely stock tablets of 200 milligrams and higher.

The pill runs through every layer of Wagner's local economy, the WSJ found. Miners at the group's gold pits take it to push through punishing shifts. Demonstrators rallying for Russia's involvement swallow the pills to keep hunger and exhaustion at bay. Fighters in the country's long insurgency swallow high doses for courage.

"In battlefield contexts, tramadol is being taken in massive doses," Nathalia Dukhan of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime told the outlet. "Fear vanishes and agitation surges as combatants enter a pharmacological trance."

The river that feeds the empire

The pipeline starts in India: pharmaceutical companies there ship the drug to firms in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Shipments are registered as standard 50-milligram doses, researchers and traders told the WSJ. High-dose pills travel concealed in the cargo. From Kinshasa, smugglers move the pills to the border town of Zongo, then across the Oubangui River. On the other side, they fill shops and market stalls throughout Bangui, the Central African Republic's capital.

The mercenaries' chief target in recent months has been that river trade, and their hold on it has tightened. Demand is strong enough that the local price tripled over the past year. Profits multiply again abroad. A consignment worth about $7,000 in the country can fetch up to $21,000 in Cameroon — once smugglers hand roughly $4,000 to Wagner and allied armed groups en route, traders told the outlet.

Prigozhin's son inherits the last fief

The remnants hold their ground upriver under the younger Prigozhin's command. Wagner arrived in 2018 under a security pact with President Faustin-Archange Touadéra and beat back the insurgency threatening his rule. After the elder Prigozhin died in a 2023 plane crash, Russia absorbed most of the group's operations worldwide — but not here. The country's remoteness and the remnants' deep entrenchment blocked the takeover. The Pentagon-sponsored Africa Center for Strategic Studies says the old Wagner has in effect taken over the state.

Blood Gold: How Kremlin mercenaries loot Africa to wage war in Ukraine

Illicit gold exports alone bring the group an estimated $180 million a year, the Global Initiative calculates. Tramadol trafficking adds a second revenue stream — and the cash buys more weapons for Wagner's forces and militias.

The country's isolation has kept Wagner off the international radar, former State Department official Cameron Hudson told the WSJ. That gives the group a freer hand — much as its Africa Corps successors operate with impunity in Mali. And the fief is looking outward: the researchers warn Wagner is entering Sudan's Darfur in coordination with the Rapid Support Forces rebels.

Russia's Africa Corps mercenaries and Mali's army killed four civilians in the country's north this week and left one victim's dismembered body arranged into a swastika, according to French broadcaster RFI. Local residents and a Malian rights group say the dead were known herders with no ties to armed groups. The Malian army has not commented.

Russia's mercenary presence across the Sahel runs on a familiar exchange—security for fragile juntas in return for influence and resources—while the same fighters and Kremlin inventory are stretched between Africa and the war in Ukraine. The network has long been accused of treating civilians as expendable and of funneling African recruits toward Russia's front lines. Ukraine's military intelligence has described the model bluntly: cheap mercenaries, looted minerals, dodged sanctions.

What residents found

The killings took place on 23 June near Zarho and near Abakoïra, three kilometers away, at the intersection of the Timbuktu and Gao regions, RFI reportedAfter a patrol of the Malian army and the Russian Africa Corps passed through, residents near Zarho found two bodies and a staged scene. One man's dismembered remains had been laid out as a swastika on the pale sand, his severed head ringed by his limbs. Near Abakoïra, a drone strike by the same patrol killed two young men on a motorbike. Riding motorbikes outside major towns has been banned since early June to limit armed groups' movement.

Civilians, not fighters

Local sources told RFI the four were civilians—two Tuaregs at Zarho, two Songhai at Abakoïra—herders whose identities were known and who had no ties to armed groups. The local human-rights collective CD-DPA condemned the killings as extreme cruelty that nothing could justify. Its secretary general, Tilla Ag Zeini, said the staging broke humanitarian law and was designed to terrorize the population.

"When you find a human being cut up to form a Nazi symbol, by a regular army, it's truly shocking," he told RFI.

Wagner, the mercenary group the Africa Corps replaced, was long known for Nazi references—down to its name, RFI noted. This is the first staging of its kind reported in Mali.

The Africa Corps, which has posted frequently on social media since attacks on 25 April, has said nothing about the scene. Russian-backed forces in Mali have faced repeated accusations of killing civilians. Wagner's brutality is documented well beyond Mali.

A separate claim

The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-linked coalition, claimed an attack the same day on a Malian army and Africa Corps convoy between Soribougou and Sibi Koro in the Kayes region. The jihadists claimed six dead and seized equipment.

Russia seeks to involve Laos in war against Ukraine, military intelligence claims

Russia is seeking to involve Laos in its war against Ukraine under the pretense of humanitarian cooperation, Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) claimed on July 5.

According to the agency, Moscow is organizing the deployment of a combined unit of military engineers from the Lao People's Armed Forces to Russia's Kursk Oblast, allegedly to help with demining operations.

Ukraine initially captured 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) of Russian territory during a cross-border offensive to Kursk Oblast but lost most of it during a Russian counteroffensive this year, which was supported by North Korean troops.

Laotian authorities have reportedly agreed to send up to 50 engineers to support Russian efforts. In addition, Laos is said to be offering free rehabilitation services to wounded Russian soldiers.

"Russia, under the guise of humanitarian rhetoric, is trying to legalize the presence of foreign military contingents on its territory, effectively using them to wage war against Ukraine," HUR said.

This comes amid broader efforts by the Kremlin to recruit foreign personnel. Russia has drawn heavily on fighters from Asia and Africa, as well as North Korea.

Ukraine has captured multiple foreigners fighting for Russian forces. an April investigation by Russian independent outlet Important Stories identified more than 1,500 foreign fighters from 48 countries who had joined Russia's war.

Laos, a landlocked Southeast Asian country bordering China, Vietnam, and Thailand, has not commented on HUR's claim. The country maintains close ties with both Moscow and its ally Beijing.
