US employers and Haitian immigrants live in constant uncertainty as status of work permits remains in limbo

For more than a month, Bobby Kuchinsky arrived at his Florida restaurant each morning worried about whether he still had enough staff or if this might be the last shift for some of his Haitian workers, who have spent more than a decade as cooks, busboys and oyster shuckers.

On Tuesday, he suspended six of them after they lost authorization to work in the US.

Both restaurant work and medicine involve abusive training and relentless devotion to minutiae – and the joy of offering comfort

I pass a mother heaving in grief while her son’s heart monitors flatline. It is the last time she will ever hold his hand. For me, this is another day on call in the intensive care unit as a pediatric physician. For her, this is the day her life shatters.

Later that night, a striking, charismatic surgeon from work treats me to an exquisite meal. Served outside a trailer, humidity barreling through our scrubs, the food is neither extravagant nor decadent. It is, however, the most succulent Texas barbecue brisket I will ever taste. This is the night I rest my head on his shoulder and he doesn’t flinch. This is the night an “us” was born.

A federal appeals court on Friday rejected a ⁠bid by Donald ​Trump’s administration to halt a judge’s order preventing it from imposing a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visas for ⁠highly skilled foreign workers.

The Boston-based first US circuit court of appeals declined to put on hold a lower court judge’s ⁠8 June ruling in a lawsuit filed by 20 Democratic state attorneys general, ​striking down the fee on the ‌basis that it ‌constituted an unlawful tax Congress never authorized.
