After a drop in demand driven by a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, California growers are plowing lettuce back into the soil and laying off workers.

Officials are investigating after multiple strains of E. coli and a type of salmonella sickened dozens of people across the United States. Two people were infected with both salmonella and E. coli.

The parent company, Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, voluntarily recalled five flavors nationwide. No injuries linked to the recalled products have been reported.
