SAM: On the podcast last week, we had what I thought was a pretty nuanced and interesting conversation about the "rare books" discourse (although I'm biased; listen and let me know). I mentioned this in the episode but it all makes me think about all the rare books I've bought over the years — these are rare by any definition of the word in that they're usually limited or out of print and I got them through used book sellers online where only one copy was often available. 

When my book launched a few years ago, I started a very short-lived Substack blog to write about some of the behind the scenes stuff happening around publication. One of those posts is a bibliography, including a lot of the books I sourced and references for my own.

JASON: Tomorrow is the third anniversary of the launch of 404 Media. If you haven’t been paying attention to us yammering on about this on the podcast and in our emails, you can celebrate with us at our party in New York in a few weeks.

Anniversaries are a good time to take stock of things, but they always seem to sneak up on us. I don’t think we’ll have much of a public post this year on the actual anniversary, but maybe some public celebrating closer to the party and panel we’re throwing. 

First off, if you’re reading this, thank you for your support and for being a subscriber. We could not be doing this without you. Starting 404 Media has changed all of our lives; we’ve said it a million times at this point, but it was not clear when we started this that it would actually work. Three years in, it is extremely working, and we are very proud of the work we’ve done, what we’ve built, and the impact our journalism has had. These are going to be disorganized, off the dome thoughts, but a few things:

EMANUEL: The news that Spotify will start tagging artists on its platform as being AI generated, and that it will not promote them, might be a sign that we’re approaching peak AI slop. What that moment looks like, to me, is not about the sheer quantity of AI generated content in the world, but about the tipping point where people and more importantly platforms, start rejecting that content algorithmically. Platforms could do this by attempting to detect and limit the spread of that content, and people will do it organically by expressing their preferences with clicks, time on page, and other signals that inform the algorithm.

EMANUEL: I was out last Friday so I want to talk about the story I published two weeks ago about AI companies buying printed books so they can scan them for training data. 

The story has gone mega viral on X, but mostly in the form of a post from an engagement farming account that both misrepresented my article and didn’t properly link back to our website. This is frustrating because it means a lot of other people siphoned traffic from our site and also because it caused a fair bit of confusion about what is happening.

JOSEPH: Thank you to everyone who came to Thursday’s FOIA Forum. It was a great turnout with a ton of really good questions. We spoke mostly about mining city council meetings for tips or context you can then use to fuel your public records requests. I’ll upload the video soon and put it on the site for everyone to watch.

The other 404 Media co-founders have been writing in Behind The Blog about disconnecting recently. I’m doing something related to that shortly: going to an Airbnb in the woods to do a makeshift ‘silent retreat’.
