Aaron Farinacci, 37, was arrested after a witness reported seeing him kneeling near the ignition site, officials said. Winds were forecast to increase Friday and Saturday, bringing a return to extremely critical fire weather.
Despite the scale of the damage, there have been no reported fatalities in the fires that started over the weekend. Late on Monday, officials arrested a man suspected of setting one of the fires.
Firefighters were hopeful that improving weather conditions in Washington state could help efforts to contain the blaze, which officials described as the largest natural disaster in the history of Spokane.
