Analysts say that weeks of Houthi attacks on Saudi targets have brought the kingdom and the Iranian-backed militia to the brink of full-blown conflict, and could open a new front in the Iran war.
A demonstration in Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, in support of the Houthi militia last month. The Houthis, who control northern Yemen on Saudi Arabia’s southern border, are supported by Iran.
The armed group, based in Yemen and backed by Iran, said it had launched missiles near the vital maritime trade route, in a conflict that shows no sign of abating.
The Yemeni government said the ship was carrying food supplies to a port on the Bab al-Mandab Strait while the Iran-backed Houthis accused Saudi Arabia of transporting weapons.
