Canada Post has submitted its plan to the federal government to transform its struggling business model into a financially sustainable postal service.

Procurement Minister Joël Lightbound unveiled a suite of changes to the postal service’s mandate in late September and gave the Crown corporation 45 days to deliver a plan to right the ship.

The former parliamentary budget officer says Ottawa has room to run steeper deficits in the upcoming federal budget, despite concerns raised by the current fiscal watchdog.

Kevin Page published a piece in Policy Magazine this week arguing that considerable levels of economic uncertainty mean Canada must meet a “hinge moment” in the upcoming budget, set for Nov. 4.

The office of federal Housing Minister Gregor Robertson says the Liberal government remains committed to cutting municipal development charges in half, after the minister was vague about fulfilling the promise at a news conference in Toronto on Tuesday.

Robertson was asked if the government was still going to cut the fees to lower the cost of homebuilding, but did not fully answer the question.
