In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed’s candidacy has split the Jewish community

The Democratic Senate nominee’s views on Israel and comments after a synagogue attack prompted a public debate among Jewish voters

When Jess Newman heard that Temple Israel in Detroit was attacked last March, her first thoughts went to her extended family.

“I grew up going to services there,” she said. “The attack was awful. My Jewish identity is very important to me.”
