Giants trade for Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy with Jaxson Dart ruled out for season

The New York Giants have acquired quarterback JJ McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick.

The Vikings announced the trade on Monday pending McCarthy passing a physical.

USC suspend Stephens for ‘disgusting’ late hit that sent Oregon QB Dante Moore to hospital

  • Senior able to move limbs but taken to hospital

  • USC describe linebacker’s play as ‘unacceptable’

The USC Trojans have suspended their linebacker ⁠Desman Stephens II after what was described as a “disgusting play” that left Oregon quarterback Dante Moore in hospital.

Moore was carted off the field after a late hit by Stephens in the first half of Oregon’s 41-27 win over USC on Saturday. During the play, Moore took off on a scramble. As he attempted to slide, he was hit in the head by Stephens, who was called for targeting and disqualified ‌from the game. Moore was taken to hospital, and an Oregon spokesperson later ⁠said the quarterback had movement in all of his extremities and was ​being evaluated.

Former NFL star Antonio Brown to avoid possibility of 30 years in prison with plea deal

  • 38-year-old had been facing attempted murder charge

  • Former player will accept aggravated assault charge

Former NFL star Antonio Brown plans to accept a plea deal on an attempted murder charge in Miami, his lawyer said Wednesday. Doing so will mean the former wide receiver avoids prison.

Brown is scheduled to appear in court next Wednesday to make the deal final. He could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted of the current attempted murder charge.

Lynx clinch WNBA No 1 seed despite ‘embarrassing’ loss to Fever and Olivia Miles injury

  • Portland Fire’s win hands Lynx top seed for playoffs

  • Olivia Miles held out of lineup due to calf injury

Caitlin Clark had 27 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, and Kelsey Mitchell added 20 points to her WNBA single-season scoring record as the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx 96-77 on Tuesday night.

It was a mixed night for the Lynx. The Portland Fire’s victory over the Golden State Valkyries later in the evening meant Minnesota have clinched the No 1 seed for the playoffs, which start Sunday. However, the Lynx were without Olivia Miles. The record-breaking rookie was a late scratch because of an injured left calf, and her absence clearly had an impact. Miles broke Clark’s single-season scoring record by a rookie against Connecticut last Sunday. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve said she almost held Miles out for that game and that the team would take the injury day by day as the playoffs approach.

UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland is recovering after ⁠being involved in an all-terrain vehicle accident while not wearing ⁠a helmet.

Strickland ⁠said ​in an Instagram video that the accident happened on Monday night in Las ⁠Vegas.

Cubs’ Bregman suffers reported facial fractures after being hit by foul ball in ‘terrible accident’

  • Third baseman was standing near on-deck circle

  • 32-year-old hopes to return for postseason

Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman suffered facial fractures when he was hit in the head by a foul ball on Sunday, according to ESPN.

Bregman was standing in the on-deck circle preparing for his at-bat when his teammate Michael Busch checked his swing and fouled off a pitch from the Cincinnati Reds’ Luis Mey. The ball struck Bregman in the face, and he immediately jogged toward the Cubs’ dugout with his hand covering the left side of his face. He was taken to hospital for X-rays and CT scans.
