US sanctions three individuals and two charities over alleged Hamas financing

The justice and treasury departments said they sent $2m to Hamas through charities and cryptocurrency, while six people were arrested across the US and France

The Trump administration on Friday unveiled sanctions against three individuals allegedly related to the Islamist militant group Hamas and against two charities based in France while also announcing six arrests – actions that the government called an “extraordinary counter-terrorism work” to expose “a sophisticated, multi‑year financing architecture”.

Investigators alleged that the network moved more than $2m to Hamas “through deceptive charitable fronts and cryptocurrency channels”.

Woman in alleged Cornell gang-rape case was ‘failed’ by system, New York governor says

Kathy Hochul briefs journalists with state attorney general Letitia James, who will be taking over the entire case

Kathy Hochul, New York’s governor, said on Friday that she would “ensure” that all the facts of the alleged gang-rape at a fraternity house at Cornell University “are brought into the light”, while harshly criticizing the elite institution for how it handled the 2024 case.

Hochul, a Democrat, said the woman in the case, was “failed” by people obligated to protect her, including the police and the county prosecutor.

New Washington DC law bans landlords from imposing dog breed restrictions

Landlords can no longer refuse pit bulls, rottweilers, dobermans or other breeds considered ‘scary’

Landlords in Washington DC will no longer be able to refuse a tenant’s dog based on its breed, size or weight, nor can they impose special charges related to these factors.

At least, that’s what a new law that took effect on Thursday aims to achieve. Animal welfare organizations and animal shelters applauded the legislation, emphasizing the benefits of reducing barriers to pet ownership in the US capital.

Family of Renee Good sues ICE agent who shot her and top Trump officials

Wife and brother of Minneapolis woman killed in immigration crackdown allege wrongful death

The family of Renee Good, the woman killed by immigration agents in January in Minneapolis, filed two federal lawsuits against the agent who shot her and several top officials in the Trump administration on Thursday.

In the lawsuits, Good’s partner, Becca Good, and her brother, Brent Ganger, alleged wrongful death and other violations of federal law, according to a press release issued by their lawyers.

Witnesses detail horror of Tennessee woman’s botched execution: ‘None of it was normal’

Witnesses in the chamber said Christa Pike was still breathing despite receiving injections intended to kill her

When the prison warden asked Christa Pike if she had any last words, she said she was going to leave this world “with love” for those on her side and also the ones angry with her.

What followed was the second botched execution in Tennessee this year, after two doses of the lethal injection failed to produce the desired effect.

Catholic clergy sexually abused nearly 1,000 Massachusetts children over decades, report finds

No new indictments from eight-year investigation as state attorney general says church knew about abuse

More than 270 Catholic clerics sexually abused nearly 1,000 children across three Massachusetts dioceses over several decades, according to a report released by the state’s attorney general’s office on Wednesday.

The eight-year-long investigation did not result in new indictments, the office said, claiming that some conduct identified was not a crime under Massachusetts law at the time it occurred, and that in other cases the applicable statute of limitations had expired.

Pentagon says it has formally completed withdrawal of US troops from Iraq

Twelve years after US mission against IS began, Trump hails ‘great day for America’ and calls Iraq war ‘a quagmire’

The Pentagon has announced it has formally completed its withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, two years after the withdrawal was agreed to and 12 years since the US mission to fight the Islamic State started.

After the announcement, Iran and its allies celebrated the departure as a victory, while Iraqi security experts worry that the withdrawal could give IS and others a chance to recover.
