A White House effort to delay a ban on intoxicating hemp was holding up a final agreement on a bipartisan spending bill ahead of a monthlong Senate recess.
At the White House’s request, senators tucked a change sought by the hemp industry into a crucial spending bill. It would benefit the son-in-law of Susie Wiles, the president’s chief of staff.
Intoxicating hemp, which is less regulated than marijuana and alcohol, has gained popularity in recent years as a pain reliever and an alternative to other intoxicants.
