US grapples with federal firefighter shortage as crews say they’re spread thin and lack resources during unrelenting year of fire

Firefighters battling enormous wildfires in the United States say the federal government is failing them at a time when supercharged blazes have made their jobs exponentially more dangerous.

While the US continues to grapple with a critical shortage of federal firefighters – with especially large gaps in essential management positions – the Trump administration has increased pressure on firefighting forces to rapidly and aggressively contain the flames.

Teen boy who clung to overturned boat for days rescued in Bering Sea

Teen and his brother and cousin, who both drowned, were fishing off Alaska’s St Lawrence Island when boat capsized

A teenaged boy was rescued having clung to a capsized fishing vessel in the Bering Sea for days after the boat overturned and his older brother and cousin drowned.

The group had last been seen been leaving Alaska’s St Lawrence Island in an 18ft fishing vessel on Friday, and were expected back early on Sunday but failed to return, the coast guard said in a statement. Authorities began their search on Sunday evening, and an aircrew found the sole survivor on top of the overturned vessel on Monday afternoon.
