Shootings occurred across the country, including in New York, Florida, Texas, Illinois and Tennessee. More than 50 people were shot, and at least five people have died.
The victims included two young boys and a woman who remained in critical condition, the police said. In a separate incident, a detective was shot but was protected by his bulletproof vest.
