The government of Prime Minister Mark Carney unveiled a program of big spending to spur Canada’s economy and reduce its dependence on the United States.
The Canadian prime minister also said that he had asked the province of Ontario not to air the ad that later prompted the president to end trade talks.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Monday, is under pressure to show he has a plan to move Canada away from its long-established economic dependence on the United States.
The announcement, which will eliminate about 1,200 jobs, came less than a week after the carmaker Stellantis said it would move production of a new vehicle to Illinois from a Toronto suburb.
