The crash, which happened north of St. Louis, closed a bridge into Illinois. A witness said it “just disintegrated” after coming in contact with a power line.

The authorities had been searching for Austin Drummond in connection with the killing of four people and the abandonment of a baby in a yard.

Austin Robert Drummond, 28, faces four counts of first-degree murder, one count of aggravated kidnapping and firearms charges.

A man poured a flammable liquid on J. Lee Vogler, a councilman in Danville, Va., and set him on fire on Wednesday, the police said.
