An election debate over public disorder frays nerves in Toronto’s Gay Village

© Laura Proctor

Left to right, Bee, Mas and Nate Monty hang out in Barbara Hall Park in Toronto on October 18, 2026.

Bee says that she sees both sides of the issue. She understands why people feel unsafe walking through the park, but thinks that people who are addicts or have mental health issues need support. She and her partner, Mas, are homeless and looking for housing. They rotate between parks throughout downtown Toronto.

A protest about rampant drug use in the park in the heart of Toronto’s Gay Village shows how even liberal minded city dwellers are getting fed up with urban disorder, making it a potent issue in this fall's cycle of municipal elections. (Laura Proctor/The Globe and Mail)

Sadly, we might be repeating Britain’s high-speed rail mistakes

A rendering of the high-speed rail line between Quebec City and Toronto. The Parliamentary Budget Officer said this week its projected cost could be $75-billion to $113-billion, considerably more than the government’s estimate of $60-billion to $90-billion.
