Monthly News – September 2026

Par : Clem

Many thanks to all of you for your donations and your amazing support.

Please note that the features presented in this blog post are a preview. They’re still being worked on and are planned for the next version of Linux Mint.

Release Strategy and Development Cycle

This is the first time we’ve taken a full year to develop Linux Mint. Going from a 6-month release schedule to a yearly one was a tough decision to make, but we’re really starting to see it pay off. We’re taking on projects and implementing changes which would previously have been considered too large or ambitious. We’ve got time. We don’t feel rushed. Development feels solid and the OS keeps getting better.

I’ve been working on Linux Mint for more than 20 years now. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many changes and new features implemented for a single release. It’s really exciting and it scares me a little bit because that also means we’re going to be very busy during the beta phase 🙂

Aside from new features, we’ve been fixing a huge number of bugs. We’ve also been working on Wayland compatibility, improving our processes and internal tools, and prototyping new editions.

Linux Mint 27 “Adrien”

Our next release is scheduled for Christmas, and it will be called Linux Mint 27 “Adrien”.

I’ve really enjoyed using girls’ names since 2006. They gave each release an identity and made it feel much warmer than just a number. From “Ada” at the very start to “Zena” last year, we’ve now reached the end of the alphabet. It’s funny how this happened just as we’re moving to a new release schedule. I want to continue this tradition with the new series. This time we’re using boys’ names 🙂

As you can see, the release number represents the upcoming year. We’ll no longer use point releases, so the release after that will be 28. You’ll upgrade from 27 to 28 to 29, and so on.

Linux Mint 27 “Adrien” will be based on Ubuntu 26.04. It will be available in at least three editions: Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE.

Alarms

Alongside the new calendar, we’ve developed an application to manage alarms.

The application takes inspiration from Android, both in its interface and how it works.

It’s intuitive and really easy to use.

You can set recurring alarms, choose custom sounds, and receive notifications even when the application isn’t running.

This application is called “Clocks”. It is part of the Clockenstein project.

Alarm notifications are handled by the Clockenstein daemon and notification agent.

Other News

There’s a lot going on behind the scenes.

We’ve been working hard on three other projects, and we’re putting the finishing touches on them.

Next month we’ll talk about Superlight, Unfold, and Velocitty.

LibreOffice Migration Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya

LibreOffice Migration Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya

When governments, organisations and companies move to LibreOffice – as we’re seeing in Austria, Germany and other countries – they usually enlist the help of Certified Migration Professionals.

Recently in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, we held a LibreOffice Migration Workshop. 40 attendees registered, from the public and private sectors, and the session was conducted pro bono by Lothar Becker, co-chair of LibreOffice’s Certification Committee. The goal of the workshop was to grow and foster the LibreOffice Technology ecosystem by supporting partners and government organisations in facilitating migrations to the suite.

It took place in the conference rooms of a hotel in central Nairobi, with a great view:

LibreOffice Migration Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya

The event was hosted and funded by the Kenya branch of GIZ Germany, along with The Document Foundation, the non-profit entity behind LibreOffice. The first two days focused on LibreOffice, covering best practices for migrations to LibreOffice Technology, with the first day being more user-centric and looking at the user interface and features of the software. There was also a general introduction to TDF and open source.

Then, the second day focused more on the migration process, providing deeper insights into migration and training protocols. Other topics included digital sovereignty with the Open Document Format (ODF) and other certification processes with TDF.

On the third day Lothar gave a talk called “Open source Community of Practice” in his capacity as OSBA board member. The talk focused on “Open Source as an Enabler of Digital Sovereignty & Innovation” with respect to DPI, Free and Open Source Software, open standards, and AI.

Special thanks to Carsten Glöckner, Amrit Labhuram, their team from GIZ Kenya for all their help and support in organising these events. Lastly, during the workshop Lothar had the opportunity to learn about the valuable work of the Telesky Foundation for digital participation of all children in Kenya from John Mbugua. Lothar handed over a book about “Ada & Zangemann” from Matthias Kirschner (Free Software Foundation Europe).
