AHS and the government deny a wrongful dismissal lawsuit from the health authority’s former CEO, Athana Mentzelopoulos.

A medical supply company in Edmonton is calling on the Alberta government to release a report the business believes could help clear its owner’s name, which it argues has been sullied by allegations provincial officials interfered in the health care system to his benefit.

MHCare Medical Corp., owned by Sam Mraiche, has asked the province and Alberta Health Services to distribute a report AHS commissioned in the fall of 2024. The health authority, under its former chief executive, hired Borden Ladner Gervais LLP to investigate deals for certain private surgical facilities, including two owned in part by Mr. Mraiche. The examination was later broadened to include MHCare and related entities.

Naheed Nenshi won the leadership of the NDP a year ago but lacked a seat as an MLA until now.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi is set to make his debut in the legislature in October, after winning a by-election in the safest riding in the province for the New Democrats, while the governing United Conservative Party trounced an upstart separatist challenger in another race.

Mr. Nenshi won the leadership of the NDP a year ago but lacked a seat as an MLA. His Monday night victory means, come fall, he will be able to directly challenge Premier Danielle Smith in the legislature, giving him more visibility across the province. He faced little resistance in Edmonton-Strathcona, previously represented by Rachel Notley, the NDP stalwart and former premier.

Isolated location, lack of unifying issue lead to smaller G7 protests

Protesters gathered before the start of the G7 summit in Calgary, Alta., June 15.

Calgary’s Enoch Park, just south of the city’s downtown core, was quiet this week, like any other.

But what made its emptiness notable is that this outdoor space, chopped up by concrete seating and sunken walkways, served as a “designated demonstration zone” for people protesting this year’s G7 Leaders’ Summit.
